Main ContentEmergency Medicine-Related Fellowships
You will find contacts listed below for our various Emergency Medicine-related fellowship programs.
Critical Care
Our department is actively pursuing accreditation for a Critical Care fellowship inclusive of Emergency Medicine physicians. During residency, you will rotate through NSICU, MICU, SICU, and PICU. All of these programs have an ACGME-accredited fellow in training. Our critical care experience is second to none. The unique position we hold as the state's only academic medical center ensures we have a diverse pathology.
EMS
We now proudly offer an ACGME-accredited one-year EMS fellowship. This fellowship is able to be tailored to your particular interests in the field. The current fellow's focus is disaster medicine. During residency, there are ample opportunities to work in the field with paramedics, or to staff large events in the local area.
For more information, contact Dr. John McCarter.
Ultrasound
Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship training provides robust experiences in order to prepare fellows to lead an ultrasound program. This year-long experience focuses heavily on becoming an expert in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) as well as becoming an expert teacher and administrator.
The fellowship program, led by Dr. Brian Tollefson, is responsible for leading weekly ultrasound conferences which include an ultrasound journal club and didactics. Also, time is spent in the Emergency Department utilizing bedside teaching of Emergency Medicine residents as well as medical students and residents and fellows from other programs. Lastly, US fellows will participate in several UMMC Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Workshops to educate outside providers on the utility of POCUS.
For more information, contact Dr. Nicholas Hoda.
Sports Medicine
Dr. Brian Tollefson also leads our Sports Medicine department. He is an expert in MSK ultrasound. MSK ultrasound training is integrated into our Ultrasound months. This is valuable exposure to a quickly developing field. Opportunities for sideline coverage and Sports Medicine clinic are available. Dr. Tollefson also operates a Friday Night Football clinic for athletes seeking care after their games. A Sports Medicine fellowship is available in conjunction with the University's Orthopedics Department.

Toxicology
UMMC offers an ACGME-accredited two-year medical toxicology fellowship. The Mississippi Poison Control Center (PCC) is located on the UMMC campus and serves the entire state of Mississippi. Fellows rotate through the Mississippi PCC and care for adult and pediatric patients at bedside at the four acute care hospitals on the UMMC campus. Additional educational experiences include rotations in an addiction psychiatry clinic, analytical toxicology laboratory, and an elective rotation. With UMMC as the tertiary referral center for the state of Mississippi, fellows enjoy a robust educational experience with poisoned patients transferred here from critical access hospitals across the state.
For more information, applicants are encouraged to contact the fellowship director, Dr. David Vearrier.

We offer research opportunities in any field that may interest you. Our faculty are currently pursuing a broad range of topics from resident wellness to sepsis management.
